The Leichtag Foundation purchased the former Paul Ecke Poinsettia Ranch on Saxony Road in Encinitas to create a culturally rich community resource for Encinitas and beyond. The 67 acre property was once a prosperous flower farm before production moved to South America in the seventies.
The farm is now a multi-layered ever-evolving center for education, community gatherings, events and sustainable farming. It is also developing an infrastructure for Jewish life in the North County Coastal Region. Programs include the Coastal Roots Farm created to educate the community about agricultural traditions and sustainable farming while growing food to share with needy North County Coastal residents.
The Encinitas School District has partnered with Leichtag to maintain the 10-acre Farm lab, an educational and agricultural resource designed to support its school lunch programs. Officials recently hired community activist Mim Michelove as the first in-house director of the food and nutrition program.
